Chances of Heart Disease Linked to Number of Missing Teeth

New Study connects Missing Teeth to Coronary Heart Disease

A study from a university in Finland has linked the chance of coronary heart disease, particularly heart attacks, to the number of teeth missing from an individual’s mouth. In fact, the University of Helsinki’s study shows that someone who is missing more than five teeth is at risk for a heart attack almost 140-percent more than those who were missing fewer teeth.

This shows serious potential issues for those who do not maintain their dental health, brushing and flossing regularly and scheduling visits to the dentist annually.


Other Issues Indicated by Missing Teeth

The study had more than 8,000 subjects, and the age range was from 25 to 75. These individuals filled out questionnaires and agreed to physical exams. Researchers than did a follow-up on each subject at the 13-year mark.

Studies found that individuals with missing teeth were not only prone to heart attacks, but they also were more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes and to die within that 13-year period. With more than nine missing teeth, subjects were 31-percent likely to be diagnosed with diabetes and 37-percent more likely to die within the decade and a half time frame researchers focused on.
